Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo"s life science experiment "Effect of space environment on mammalian reproduction (Space Pup)" has started.
First Hicari experiment (Hicari#1) carried out from 1st to 5th Mar. 2013. Hicari#1 operations in space and on the ground were successful. Hicari#2 experiment carried out in the ISS from 23rd to 27th July 2013. The #2 cartridge will be return on the ground in Nov., 2013 by Soyuz 35. [PDF 109KB]
JAXA is now developing CALET(Calorimetric Electron Telescope), as a next space science mission payload through the use of Kibo Exposed Facility. JAXA and ASI made an arrangement in 2011 for the cooperation on CALET mission.
MAXI has detected the remnant of a hypernova explosion in the direction of Cygnus.
Stem Cells experiment studies the effects of space environment to mammalian (mouse) cells using embryonic stem cells (ES cells).
Marangoni convection experiments investigate the change in internal flow of a large liquid bridge made of silicon oil and the change of temperature distributions along with the flow change.
In the Hicari Exp., a new crystal growth method named the Traveling Liquidus Zone (TLZ) method which JAXA invented for homogeneous semiconductor alloy crystal growth will be evaluated.
"Blue Earth Gazing" is an art theme of viewing Earth from space through water, which aims to view Earth from a fresh perspective and introduce Japanese aesthetics as well as to lead to develop into rich culture for the future space society.
"Message in a Bottle" is an art project aiming at inspiring people on the ground to feel messages from space, such as the activities performed by astronauts in outer space, relationship between people and space, and a message from space to our descendant, by bringing back the space-filled bottle to Earth.
