Space Utilization Research Program
A New Era in Space Utilization is Coming in the Twenty-first Century

In the first half of the twentieth century, space was beyond human reach. Today, satellite communication's and Earth observation from space are becoming essential to the world's economic activity and the well-being of the global environment. Space development is also giving humankind insight into the origin of space and life, itself, through astronomical observation and planetary exploration.
Out of this historical progression, the age of the space station is about to arrive. In the beginning of the twenty-first century, the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) of the International Space Station is expected to operate as an on-orbit laboratory. In the JEM, new types of experimentation and observation are planned utilizing the environmental conditions of space.
