Flight Day 6 (June 6, 2008)

The JAXA flight control team (JFCT) conducted the final activation of the Kibo Pressurized Module (PM) and ensured its redundancy and safer operations. In parallel with the busy intravehicular activities (the PM outfitting and rack transfer), the mission’s second spacewalk (EVA#2) was conducted. The planned tasks (which is mainly the PM exterior outffing) and some additional tasks were accomplished.

Flight Day 5 (June 5, 2008)

Today, the Kibo’s main module began its operations. At 5:25 a.m., the Kibo’s Pressurized Module (PM) was activated with B-string power that allows providing initial environmental conditions inside the PM. The hatch of the PM was opened at 6:05 a.m. and the first crew-ingress occurred at 6:09 a.m.

Flight Day 4 (June 4, 2008)

Today, Kibo’s Pressurized Module (PM) was installed on the ISS at 08:42 a.m. Also the mission’s first spacewalk (EVA#1) was conducted.

Flight Day 3 (June 3, 2008)

Space Shuttle Discovery docked with the ISS at 3:03 a.m. today. The hatches between Discovery and the ISS were opened at 4:36 a.m. Following the hatch opening, the STS-124 crewmembers were welcomed by the ISS crew.

Flight Day 2 (June 2, 2008)

Aboard the space shuttle Discovery today, STS-124 crewmembers performed the inspection of the orbiter's Thermal Protection System (TPS) using the space shuttle’s robotic arm (Shuttle Remote Manipulator System: SRMS) and prepared for the rendezvous/docking on FD3.

Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off! (FD1) (June 1, 2008)

Today, the Space Shuttle Discovery successfully lifted off at 5:02 p.m. May 31, 2008 EDT (6:02 a.m. June 1, 2008 JST) delivering Kibo’s PM and JEMRMS. Aboard Discovery are JAXA astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and his six fellow crewmates.

STS-124 Mission Crew arrived at NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) / Countdown begins (May 30, 2008)

The STS-124 Mission crewmembers arrived at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) at 1:30 a.m. May 28, 2008 JST. On the same day, STS-124 countdown begins for the launch.

STS-124 (1J) Mission Launch Date Announced (May 20, 2008)

Following the STS-124 Mission Flight Readiness Review (FRR), the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery is officially set for May 31 at 5:02 p.m. EDT (6:02 a.m. June 1, 2008 JST).

STS-123 Mission General Debriefing -JAXA Astronaut Takao Doi Homecoming Event- (May 15, 2008)

JAXA held the STS-123 (1J/A) Mission General Debriefing on May 10, 2008. This mission debriefing, which was arranged in a talk show style, was a part of astronaut Doi’s homecoming event intended for Japanese public.

STS-124 Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (TCDT) Concluded (May 12, 2008)

The STS-124 Mission crew and ground team concluded the STS-124 Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test (TCDT) as scheduled.
