Japanese Space Food

Astronaut Wakata's presentation of Japanese space foods (to Video Library page)

The Japanese space foods are proposed by food manufacturers and certified as Japanese space food if they meet the criteria according to the Japanese space food certification standard established by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). These foods have been developed so that Japanese astronauts staying long time on the ISS can enjoy domestic foods, alleviate their mental stresses, and maintain and improve their job performance.

Since Japanese foods have worldwide been recognized to be healthy, it is expected that astronauts of the international partners waiting for a long stay on the ISS will adopt Japanese space foods during their stay.

Scope of the Japanese space foods are daily foods consumed by Japanese people at their home and are not limited to the Japanese traditional cuisine. The food items which have been certified as Japanese space foods also include curry, ramen noodle and tomato-boiled sardine.
