Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF)

CO2 gas incubator with controlled temperature and humidity

Overview

The Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) is used for various life science experiments such as cultivating cells, plants, and so on in the JEM Pressurized Module. CBEF consists of an incubator and control equipment for CBEF control and communication.

And incubator unit consists of a µG compartment and a 1G compartment . 1G compartment has a centrifuge that can control gravity from 0.1 to 2.0 G for gravity contrast experiment with the µG compartment. Experiment unit are set in containment canister and installed in the CBEF.

Incubator can control temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration for cultivation.

    • Temperaure control : 15 deg. C to 40 deg. C
    • Humidity control : 20 % RH to 80 % RH
    • CO2 concentration : 0 vol % to 10 vol

CBEF consists of the following two compartments for caultivation, so, gravity contrast experiments can be performed easily.

µG compartment : microgravity condition 1 G compartment : controlled 0.1 G to 2.0 G

The centrifuge can control gravity artifically.

 

Standard Canister

Common interface for Biological Equipment Unit (BEU)users

CBEF provides a standard canister with a common interface to BEUs. Experiment users can develop BEU easily with common interfaces of the standard canister.

Standard Canister (Medium Size)

The standard canister can receive power through a connector. The BEU can also transfer analog signal and video signals to the CBEF through this connector.

The µG compartment accommodates six standard medium canister, the 1G compartment, four.

 

Tele-Science

Experiment parameters can be set from the ground by remote control

All condition parameters of CBEF can be set or changed from the ground by the telemetry command. And the experiment parameters can be preset with the user-program to be controlled automatically.
