This is JAXA's October 2003 primary activity report for Japanese ISS
astronauts.
The
18th Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers
The 18th Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers
was held from October 12 to October 17, 2003, mainly in the National
Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Odaiba, Tokyo, but also
in several other places in Japan. The purpose of this Congress, led
by the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), an organization of astronauts
from around the world, is to enrich people's lives through sharing
the valuable experiences learned from spaceflight as shared property
of humankind. This annual event is held at different locations throughout
the world, and this was the first time for Japan to be the host country.
On the fifth day, October 16, exchange events entitled "Space
and Education" were held at eleven cities and prefectures all
over Japan, with participation by astronauts, children, and others.
JAXA astronauts Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino, along with other astronauts,
joined the community day events in Shimonoseki, Kitakyushu, Mie, and
Sapporo. They gave lectures on space and had a lively exchange of opinions
with participants.

Astronaut Sumino participated in the "Space and Women's Forum," hosted
by the Group for Welcoming V. V. Tereshkova, held at Makuhari Prince
Hotel in Chiba. With Ms. Valentina V. Tereshkova, who became the first
woman in space when she flew on Vostok 6 of the former Soviet Union
in 1963, astronaut Sumino gave a speech on ISS and the history of spaceflight,
and answered questions from participants.

Astronaut Sumino giving lectures |
Astronaut Sumino gave a lecture titled "Dream for outer space" at
the Science Festa in Izumi 2003, held at the Municipal Liberation General
Center in Izumi City, Osaka.
In the quiz game, all the participants got involved in answering questions
such as "Does fire become round when burning in a microgravity environment?"
or "Will you be taller when you are in space?" In the Q and A session,
questions included "How many people can fly in the Space Shuttle?"
and "How do astronauts handle stresses in space?" The participants
were so excited that they did not have enough time to answer all the
questions.
This was the first time for astronauts to visit Izumi City, and Astronaut
Sumino commented, "I think it is wonderful of Izumi City to revitalize
science education by cultivating children's interests toward space.
I think it was a meaningful event."
