ISS Astronaut Activity Report, July 2002

This is NASDA's July 2002 primary activity report for ISS astronauts.

LP-TIM #13
The "KIBO" Japanese Experiment Module LP-TIM (Launch Package Technical Interchange Meeting) with NASA was held at Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) from July 29 to August 2.

LP-TIM is a joint Japan-U.S. meeting conducted to discuss Kibo technical issues. This LP-TIM was the thirteenth, the twelfth meeting was held last August at TKSC and coordinated long-standing issues related to Kibo shipment to Kennedy Space Center.

Astronaut Hoshide participated in LP-TIM # 13 with NASDA Kibo development project members.

Astronaut Hoshide's comment

In LP-TIM, technical interchanges are conducted in wide-ranging fields. This time, I participated in meetings related to EVA. For example, we discussed the design of thermal blankets attached during launch so that we could remove the blankets easily in EVA. For example, it is difficult to handle large things in space, even things like cloth, because of microgravity. Thus, we must find better ways to fold blankets, in one case.

In addition to Kibo, NASDA has also developed the Centrifuge, an ISS facility for life science. The Centrifuge Rotor (CR), the main Centrifuge component has been technically evaluated by experts. As part of the evaluation, Astronauts Furukawa and Doi visited the CR development site to confirm its development status.
