Kibo's airlock operation training |
|
|
Astronauts Furukawa and
Hoshide |
Astronaut Sumino
|
Astronauts received the Kibo airlock operation training using the "Kibo"
airlock trainer in the Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC). Kibo's airlock is
used to transfer equipment in and out of the ISS only, and is not used
for transferring astronauts. They transferred a box that simulated a payload
from the Pressurized Module (PM) to the external side through the air
lock, and then reversed the operation.
More about Kibo's airlock.

Flight training |
|
Astronaut Furukawa
|
Astronaut Furukawa received flight training using a small aircraft (Cessna172)
in Houston, Texas. The purpose of this training is to improve skills necessary
as an astronaut, such as multitask handling, radio communication in English,
situation awareness under a stress environment. During training, the outside
view was blocked, and astronaut Furukawa flew mainly using instruments.
Astronaut Hoshide received the same training in May 2002.
|
6th Japanese Joint Operation Panel (JJOP #6)
participation |
Astronaut Furukawa participated in JJOP #6 held at Johnson Space Center
(JSC) with astronaut Doi. The JJOP is held twice a year between NASA and
NASDA, to coordinate Kibo's operation, flight rules, operational procedures,
etc.
During the JJOP #6, they discussed the timeline for the Kibo assembly flight,
computer display layouts , and other subjects regarding Kibo's operation.

Space-related broadband site interview |
|
Astronaut Sumino and Mr. Leiji Matsumoto |
Astronaut Sumino was interviewed during a program on a space-related broadband
site.
In this interview, she talked with cartoonist Mr. Leiji Matsumoto about
what interested them in the universe, the difficulties and experiences
of daily training and work, each other's outlook on the universe, and
expectations for future space development.
The Japanese ISS astronauts' July activity report will be issued
in August 2002.
