ISS Astronaut Activity Report, December 2001

This is NASDA's December primary activity report for ISS astronauts Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino.
The second session of the advanced training in Houston has been completed, and the advanced training for Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module, was started at the Tsukuba Space Center.

Advanced Training
Advanced training is conducted using international partners' facilities to deepen the astronauts' understanding of the systems and operations of the International Space Station (ISS). The advanced training conducted at NASA Johnson Space Center, Texas, in October through December was the second following the session last spring. Astronauts Doi, Wakata, and Noguchi also participated in this training.
Some of the December training scenes are shown here.

  • On-orbit ISS repair kit training
Astronaut Furukawa, together with Astronauts Wakata and Noguchi, received training on operating the on-orbit repair kit that will be used in the ISS. Astronaut Hoshide and Sumino received the same training in October 2001.

  • Advanced training on Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module
Astronaut Hoshide, together with Astronaut Leopold Eyharts of ESA, participated in the Advanced training of Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module. This training is conducted at the NASDA Tsukuba Space Center to familiarize ISS astronauts with the Pressurized Module and Experiment Logistics Module-Pressurized Section of Kibo. In each session, groups of two astronauts, one from Japan and another from an International Partner, will attend the training. The December session was the first of the six sessions that will be held until the end of March. Each session is composed of summaries of Kibo's interior systems, operations of communication systems, electric systems, thermal control systems, and environmental control systems under normal and abnormal conditions. Combined operations of these systems will also be taught.
