ISS Astronaut Activity Report, October
2001 |
|
This is NASDA's October primary activity report for ISS astronauts Furukawa,
Hoshide, and Sumino. They primarily spent their time in Advanced Training
conducted in Houston, Texas.
|
Advanced Training |
Advanced training is conducted using international partners' facilities
to deepen the astronauts' understanding of the systems and operations of
the International Space Station (ISS). The advanced training conducted
at NASA Johnson Space Center, Texas, in October was the second following
the session last spring. Astronauts Doi, Wakata, and Noguchi also participated
in this training. They received training on major ISS systems and also
on medical training, on-orbit repairs, US payloads, and photography using
cameras that will actually be used on orbit. They also received training
on systems and operations such as the galley, waste collection system (i.e.
toilet), and emergency egress of the Space Shuttle, which will be used
as a transport to the ISS.
Some of the October training scenes are shown here.
- Training on Space Shuttle Galley
They were trained on the Space Shuttle galley using the Space Shuttle
training facility.

- Training on Decompression sickness
They learned about decompression sickness that could possibly be caused
by extra-vehicular activity, studying its physiology, symptoms, and
risks, and also methods of medical evaluation . Astronaut Wakata also
attended this lecture together with astronauts Furukawa, Hoshide, and
Sumino,.
- Training on the ISS on-orbit repair
kits
The astronauts learned how to use the ISS repair kits. The kits include
a power tool, putty to repair holes, a soldering iron, a riveting kit,
an electrical cable repair kit, an optical fiber damage diagnostic kit,
etc.

"The Rocket Symposium Part 2 --- H-IIA Rocket a New Challenge"
took place in Tokyo and in Fukuoka Prefecture, on October 27 at Chiyoda
Media Plaza, and on October 28 at Kitakyushu Expo-Festival Site, Kitakyushu
Interchange Pavillion Theater Room, in Kitakyushu-city, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Astronaut Furukawa participated in both events. In this symposium, the
performance of the H-IIA test vehicle No. 1 that was launched on August
29 from Tanegashima Space Center was reported, and discussions were held
among space related people and people who are interested in space on the
future usage of rockets.
