Astronaut Doi ready for EVA



NASDA astronaut, Doi Takao, will participate in the STS-87 mission as a Mission Specialist (MS). MS Doi will be the first Japanese to conduct a spacewalk. One of his responsibilities is EVA operations to evaluate the EVA crane installed in the shuttle's cargo bay for on-orbit replacement of a simulated battery unit. This EDFT is planned to verify the procedures and the tools to be used for the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station. It is considered as an important step for the successful assembly and operation of the International Space Station.

Astronaut Doi's Main Respousibilities

To conduct an EVA to verify and test EVA equipments, and procedures for the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station.
  • Shuttle Entry Operations support
To support the Commander and Pilot while shuttle orbit reentry by monitoring instruments in the flight deck.

  • Photo/Video Operations and Laser ranging support
To perform photo and video operations and laser ranging during Spartan 201 deploy, rendezvous and retrieval.

  • Space Experiments
To conduct Middeck Glovebox (MGBX) experiments.
  • Medical Experiment
To collect medical date for investigating the effects spaceflight on the human body.
