Mission

Flight Day 8

Last Updated: July 23, 2009

The 3rd EVA of the STS-127 mission (Image credit: NASA)

The main activity on the flight day (FD) 8 was the 3rd Extravehicular Activity (EVA#3) which featured preparation for transferring payloads carried on the Kibo Experiment Logistics Module Exposed Section (ELM-ES) to the Kibo Exposed Section (ES), and changing of batteries on the P6 truss.

Prior to the EVA, the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) was used to relocate the Integrated Cargo Vertical Light Deployable (ICC-VLD) to the work site.

The EVA crew completed preparation of transferring the payload from the Kibo ELM-ES to the Kibo EF, by removing the insulation cover of the Inter-orbit Communication System Exposed Facility subsystem (ICS-EF) and releasing the launch restraints of the Space Environment Data Acquisition Equipment-Attached Payload (SEDA-AP). They also completed changing two of the six batteries on the P6 truss.

Originally NASA had planned to change 4 out of six batteries in the EVA#3. However, because the carbon dioxide level inside Christopher Cassidy's spacesuit got higher than expected, the EVA was terminated earlier and only 2 out of six batteries were changed, leaving the other 2 to complete in EVA#4.

Activities for FD8 include:

  • transferring the payloads to the Kibo EF
  • preparing for EVA#4
