Flight Day 2 (April 18 CDT)
Inside of the Spacelab

Following an on-time launch yesterday afternoon, astronauts Linnehan and Williams started up the Spacelab at 3:00 p.m. CDT, and the STS-90 crew entered the laboratory in the shuttle's cargo bay to begin research work. Spacelab is a reusable laboratory facility used for life science experiment in space.

STS-90 crewmembers were awakened later today's morning just before 8 a.m. CDT, and they started their activities. Payload activities today will include Williams and Buckey setting up the General Purpose Work Station (GPWS), a facility in the Spacelab used for studying and working with rodents. Linnehan and Pawelczyk will conduct vestibular experiments - investigations that look at the balance mechanism - and Altman will service the on-board refrigerator freezer used for storing biological samples.

Status of Japan related experiments

The Vestibular Function Experiment Unit (VFEU) was checked out yesterday. NASA and NASDA have been studying the data anomaly and further resolution steps of a Fish Package (FP) of four FP's, today. The VFEU is an aquarium unit that has four separate houses to hold the fish and snails being carried on the flight. Visual Vestibular Investigation System for Spatial Orientation of the Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex research was set up yesterday. Rats and Rodent Research Animal Holding Facility are in good condition.
