Flight Day 1 (April 17 CDT)
Launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia
Launch of Columbia
Dr. Chiaki Muka at MCC

Space Shuttle Columbia for mission STS-90 was launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 17, 2:19 p.m. EDT. A two-week life sciences research will be conducted during this mission.

During the STS-90 mission, NASDA astronaut Dr. Chiaki Mukai, as the alternate payload specialist, will support the on board crew from the Mission Control Center (MCC) located at NASA Johnson Space Center. Dr. Mukai, who watched the Shuttle soar into the sky from her position at MCC, said that "This Neurolab Program of STS-90 will be conducting 26 medical science and life science experiments, which international scientists including Japanese scientists proposed. It is a very exciting mission for me as a medical scientist. I will do my best to contribute to this international project as a Japanese astronaut with my experience as a crewmember from IML-2 (STS-65) and a medical professional. I am also looking forwards to obtaining important data from this mission."

STS-90 is the 25th flight of Columbia and the 90th mission flown since the start of the space shuttle program in April 1981.
