Flight Day 3 (November 21 CST)
Release of Spartan 201
Mission specialist Takao Doi woke up at MET+01:20:00, made preparation of TV operations for deployment of the Spartan solar science satellite at MET+01:23:15. After that, though mission specialist Kalpana Chawla released Spartan from the robot arm on time at 3:04 p.m. Nov. 21 CST, it did not execute a pre-programmed pirouette maneuver designed to verify its attitude control system was functional. Chawla attempted to recapture Spartan moments later, but did not receive it. Now the Spartan is drifting in space. Special teams met today to formulate a formal course of action. And there, a manual retrieval as part of a spacewalk by mission specialists Winston Scott and Takao Doi was discussed as one of the options.
