The liquid phase sintering experiments in the Large Isothermal
Furnace are very high temperature experiments. The combinations of temperature
(1500℃) and time (up to 600min) provide importance science information on component
distortion and microstructure evolution. The LIF team has a large challenge
in combining the hardware, samples, and system support for success. Cooperation
by all partners is crucial to this experiment - including the MSL-1 crew, NASDA
and IHI support personnel, NASA and Penn State in sample fabrication, and the
crew in Huntsville that ensures functioning of all aspects. This is a true cooperation.
