JAXA PCG (Fifth Session) completed
All times are Japan Standard Time (JST)
The fifth session of the High Quality Protein Crystallization (JAXA PCG), which has been performed using the Protein Crystallization Research Facility (PCRF) on Kibo, was completed.
Launch | Thursday, 8:06 a.m., January 26, 2012, via Russian Progress (46P) cargo spacecraft |
---|---|
Experimental Period | Sunday, January 29 to Friday, April 27 |
Return | Friday, 8:45 p.m., April 27 via Soyuz TMA-22 spacecraft (28S) |
During this time experiment, 96 samples (48 different proteins) were grown in the PCRF Cell Units (using two cell cartridges.) Proteins to be used for the creation of medicines for Malaria, Influenza, and muscle dystrophy, proteins to be used for environmentally-friendly biofuel development, and proteins which may contribute to the solution of environmental and energy issues such as nylon products dissolution, were included in the samples.
By conducting the space experiment on Kibo, acquisition of much higher quality protein crystals is expected than the ones grown on earth. Just like the previous experiment, proteins from Russia and Malaysia are also aboard as international research cooperation, and the outcome of protein crystallization is expected.
