H-IIA launch team |
H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 3 (H-IIA F3) was launched on September
10 from the Tanegashima Space Center. The H-IIA F3 carried two payloads,
"Kodama" (Data Relay Test Satellite (DRTS)) and Unmanned
Space Experiment Recovery System (USERS) Spacecraft, and released
the two into their respective orbits. On this launch, astronaut
Furukawa worked as a member of the launch team and helped explain
to the guests the importance of this launch. Kodama would not only
relay data between the satellites and the Earth, but also between
the International Space Station (ISS) and the Earth.

The Space-day on September 12 ! |
On September 12, 1992, a Space Shuttle was launched with astronaut Mohri,
who is the first Japanese astronaut who experienced Space Shuttle flight
to space. In commemoration of this launch, various events are held on or
around September 12 as the Space-day every year. This year, the tenth anniversary,
astronauts were active in several events, as in past years.
On September 14, Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) was opened to the public
and a Space-day special event was held. Astronaut Hoshide participated
in "Challenge the Astronaut!" in which he played games using
a robot arm with the audience who had passed a multiple-choice quiz
on the ISS and astronauts. |
The Japanese ISS astronauts' October activity report will be issued in
November 2002.
