ISS Astronauts Activity Report, July
2001 |
|
NASDA's ISS astronauts Furukawa and Hoshide and astronaut candidate (ASCAN)
Sumino participated in various tests and events in July. This is their
July training primary activity report.

Space Square - Let's learn about Space with astronaut Noguchi
- |
The event "Space Square - Let's learn about Space with astronaut Noguchi"
was conducted on 12 July. Some 100 people attended this event. This event
was planned for students ranging from fifth graders to middle school so
they could look at, hear, try and think of space.
Astronaut Noguchi conducted sessions on experiments, STS-104 launch count
down, and questions and
answers for children. Astronaut Furukawa and Hoshide participated in, and
stimulated these sessions.

Rocket Symposium |
|
Japan's astronauts |
Anticipating the H-IIA rocket launch scheduled for this summer, a Rocket
Symposium was held at the National Museum of Emmerging Science and Innovation
on 14 July to consider Japan's space development and rocket technology.
Rocket engineers, astronauts, space research specialists, and everyday
people gathered for the discussion.
Astronauts Furukawa and Hoshide attended the "Open Salon," a
special program in which rocket engineers and astronauts directly discuss
issues with participants. At the end of the symposium all astronauts (Mohri,
Doi, Mukai, Wakata, Noguchi, Furukawa and Hoshide) gathered together and
gave their messages to the audience. Astronaut Furukawa said, "I believe
Japan can contribute to the International Space Station program and the
world's space development to follow, through the H-IIA rocket."
Astronaut Hoshide said, "We hope to go to space aboard Japan's rocket
as soon as possible," which attracted people's attention. Unfortunately,
ASCAN Sumino was being trained in Houston so she could not participate
in this symposium. Instead she sent a message, "A rocket is a bridge
that connects the Earth and Space. I am praying for the success of the
launch of H-IIA."
|
Flight Training |
ASCAN Sumino continued small aircraft (Cessna172) instrument flight training
that started in June and lasted untill the middle of July.
|
Flight Crew Interface Test of Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed
Section of "Kibo" (the Japanese Experiment Module). |
|
Astronaut Hoshide supporting tests |
A Flight Crew Interface
Test (FCIT) of Kibo's Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section (ELM-ES)
was held at Tsukuba Space Center on 17 July. FCIT tests the user-friendliness
of Kibo's equipment and hardware. Along with astronaut Doi,, who became
the first Japanese astronaut to conduct extravehicular activities in November
1997, astronaut Hoshide participated in this test.
|
Flight Crew Interface Test of Kibo's robotic arm |
|
FCIT group |
An FCIT of Kibo's robotic
arm was conducted at Tsukuba Space Center from 19 to 20 July. Astronauts
Doi, Furukawa and Hoshide and ASCAN Sumino attended this test.
|
Kibo System training |
Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino participated mainly in the control system
training for Kibo's system at Tsukuba Space Center at the end of July.
The Japanese ISS astronauts' August activity report will be
issued in the middle of September.
