Basic Training Report, October 1999

Ellington Air Field where flight training
is being conducted.

Astronaut Candidates (ASCANs) Furukawa and Hoshide are receiving aircraft flight training using small aircraft in Houston, Texas. The training will last about two months (mid-September to mid-November).

Their training impressions are presented here.

Under the really blue sky of Houston, I am flying an aircraft and trying to maintain its attitude by watching the horizon. Flight training reminds me of when I was learning how to drive a car. I am enjoying the training very much.
ASCAN Furukawa

It has been a year and a half since I last flew, and it took me a while to get the "feel" back, but now I am enjoying the new challenge of flying by mainly using instruments. It's too bad though, that I can't look outside of the aircraft on a beautiful day since I wear a "hood" that prevents me from looking outside so that I can only see and focus on the instruments!
ASCAN Hoshide

While the two ASCANs are being trained in the US, ASCAN Sumino is receiving language and physical training courses at Tsukuba Space Center. She will receive aircraft flight training in the near future.

The next training report will be issued in early December.
