
Born 1929, in Wonsan, North Korea, the poet Kim Kwang-rim graduated from Korea University, where he majored in Korean literature. He has been president of the Korean Poets' Association and Professor of Japanese at Chang' an Junior College. The prizes he has received include the Korean Poets' Association Prize (1973), the Republic of Korea National Literature Award (1985), and the Republic of Korea Order of the Precious Crown for Culture. Among his principal works are 16 collections of poetry, including The heartbroken grafted tree. He has also published numerous volumes of criticism and essays. In Japanese, volumes 5 and 10 of Seijusha's World Poets Series are devoted entirely to his poetry, and there is a volume of essays, Jiyu no Namida (Freedom's Tears).
