Role of Johnson Space Center
NASA's astronauts conduct most of their training and tasks related to Space
Shuttle missions at Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas. Japanese
astronaut, Koichi Wakata, will be on board the STS-92 mission this autumn
and is busy here at JSC with mission training and technology development
and evaluation.
Astronaut Wakata's role in STS-92 mission and how he is being trained
STS-92 is an International Space Station (ISS) assembly mission. On this
mission astronaut Wakata has many on-orbit roles, such as robot arm operation,
ascent phase support on the flight deck, on-orbit Shuttle system operation,
rendezvous support, logistic supplies transfer to the ISS, on-orbit system
maintenance, and IMAX camera handling. These days he is refreshing his basic
knowledge and skills as an astronaut through Flight Similar Training, and
is also conducting STS-92 mission-specific training.
To accomplish a Space Shuttle mission, all the crew members must cooperate.
Integrated simulation training, including other crew members is thus conducted
to simulate real flight, in addition to the task specific training. As less
than six months remain until the STS-92 launch, more integrated simulation
is now being conducted. From now on, the number of integrated simulation
training sessions will be gradually increased and will become more realistic.
Individual task training is also being continued.
Training using Shuttle Mission Simulator-Motion Base

SMS-MB
|
Shuttle Mission Simulator-Motion Base (SMS-MB) is a motion simulator that
can be used for launch and landing phases. It can reproduce sound and vibration,
which allows it to be used for training performed along a timeline, such
as training for nominal operations training, contingency operations training,
and cooperation with other crewmembers. In addition, connecting the SMS-MB
with Mission Control Center (MCC) enables a Joint Integrated Simulation
(JIS) with the ground flight controller team.
We are going to report how astronaut Wakata is being trained.
