The ISS / Kibo Times will be issued quarterly to introduce Japan's activities on the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo", the International Space Station (ISS), and the activities of JAXA Astronauts succeeding the former ISS/Kibo Monthly News.
In the evening of April 13, 2017(Japan time), the initial mission of the collaboration between Japan and Turkey - space experiments in an exposed environment using the Exposed Experiment Handrail Attachment Mechanism called ExHAM- has been initiated on board Kibo.
Nakashimada Engineering Works, Ltd. and Tohoku University jointly issued a press release, announcing an experimental outcome of their 1U sized CubeSat called FREEDOM deployed from "Kibo" on January, 2017.
Japanese researchers clarified the extent of DNA damage in mouse spermatozoa preserved for a long period onboard the "Kibo", and successfully produced healthy offspring for the first time ever in space.
On June 2, the protein crystal samples acquired in the High-Quality Protein Crystal Growth Experiment (the sixth session of the second series) conducted onboard the "Kibo" from April 21, 2017 returned to Earth. Microscopic observation was conducted on June 6, immediately after the samples were returned to Japan from Russia.
On July 7, 2017, the five CubeSats created in the BIRDS project was successfully deployed from "Kibo". Designed and developed by international students (in Mongolia, Ghana, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Japan) at Kyushu Institute of Technology.
