ISS Astronauts Advanced Training Started

Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino started the Advanced Training* from this month.

*:Advanced training: A series of training conducted following the Basic Training. The Advanced Training is conducted to have the astronauts understand the ISS and its operation. Approximately one year of training will be conducted using each international partner's facilities. Although astronaut candidate Sumino has not finished water survival training she has started this training under international partners' agreement.

Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino received US system training using simulators at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), TX.

This is a part of the Advanced Training in which astronauts from the international partners study ISS systems together in detail. One astronaut from the US, four from Europe, one from Russia, and three from Japan participated in the training. In the future, Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo's" training will be held in Japan for the astronauts of the international partners.

The three people received training related to the basic structure and functions of US segments including onboard computers, power systems, thermal control systems, and environment control and life support systems. The ISS system training will be continued in May.

Presentations for NASA astronaut candidates
Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino held presentations at JSC for NASA astronaut candidates concerning history of Japanese space development, NASDA's activities and organization, Kibo, and the H-IIA rocket as requested by NASA.
