
Poet. Born October 20, 1951 in Saitama Prefecture, he graduated from Waseda University with a major in Japanese literature. As one of the leading poets of the post-war generation he is in the forefront of contemporary poetry, and at the same time is a prolific critic, translator, and writer on comparative poetics. His poetry has been translated into many languages and published in magazines like PoPoésie in France.
Active in many areas, he gives poetry readings both in Japan and abroad, has released a poetry reading CD, and cooperates with artists from other fields. He played a leading role in gContemporary Poetry Festival 95, Poetry Goes Outh and gContemporary Poetry Festival 97, Dance and Poésie in France.h
From August to November 2005, he was invited to the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in the United States. In December of the same year, he was the director of the Japan side of the gJapan-European Contemporary Poetry Festival in Tokyo.h
