About Bio PADLES

Space radiation has affects on biological specimens and samples onboard at the cellular level, including DNA deficits and DNA mutations.

For the life science experiment performed on board the ISS, it is necessary to acquire accurate data of the radiation dose and radiation characteristics as physical environmental parameters for comparing with the physiological indicators in order for quantitatively clarifying the effects of the space radiation exposure to the onboard crews and biological samples. Therefore, Bio PADLES will be installed near biological samples to measure accurately the radiation dose of the samples.

Installation Locations of Bio PADLES

Bio PADLES dosimeters can be installed in various temperature environments (for example, minus 80 degree Celsius in the MELFI refrigerator, and 37 degree Celsius in the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF)).

Installation Locations of Bio PADLES : Bio PADLES is small-sized, light-weight and unpowered(battery-less) type of dosimeter package so that it can be deployed near the living samples. cell Bio PADLES

Flight Result of Bio PADLES

Bio PADLES dosimeter is launched on a request, from an investigator of a life science experiment selected from JAXA's international life-science program solicitation or the candidate research program of the first review. JAXA performs radiation measurements, data analisys and distribution of biological samples which is important for life science experiments in space.
