Astronaut Mohri's Training Report (1)

Simulation at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
On 11 and 12 May, Dr. Mohri joined an SRTM operations simulation at NASA JPL located in Pasadena, California.
The simulation was conducted for the selected specific time line in the actual manner as on orbit. This simulation modeled the 60m antenna extension that will be conducted on the first day of the mission, and eighth day's mapping (radar data acquisition for map generation) . During the simulation, training instructors intentionally input equipment trouble or malfunction data, to test if we could respond properly. With cooperation of astronauts and ground personnel, we could solve the difficult problems.

Emergency Escape Training
Emergency Escape Training
Real Video (3 minutes)
At NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, emergency escape training was conducted. The training assumed that a problem had arisen during a Shuttle flight which forced the Shuttle make an emergency landing or that the crew was forced to escape from the Shuttle in the air. On 12 April, training to escape through the Shuttle flight deck window to the ground was conducted assuming that the Shuttle made an emergency landing. On 19 May, training to escape through the Shuttle's hatch while it is gliding was conducted. A long pole was extended from the hatch, and the crew escaped along it so that they would not crash into the orbiter's wing. This is astronaut Mohri's second flight, so he is acquainted with all of those procedures. However, such training is repeated every Shuttle flight to ensure safety.

The next training report will be issued by the end of June.
