E-mail from Astronaut Wakata to Prime Minister Mori

On Oct. 16, 2000 - at about 3:00 p.m., Japanese astronaut Wakata e-mailed from Discovery to the Prime Minister of Japan Mr. Yoshiro Mori.

It was with great pleasure that I accepted the opportunity to speak with you from space.

I realize that under your leadership, various initiatives are proceeding in IT (Information Technology), the leading technology in many aspects of our society. It is evident that the most advanced science and technology highly depends on the progress of IT. At the same time, I am convinced that space development, including the International Space Station, plays a significant role in the progress of IT.

Everything is going smoothly on this mission so far. I will make full use of my training experience to complete the remaining tasks and return safely to Earth.

Koichi Wakata, Astronaut, National Space Development Agency of Japan
from the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-92)
