ISS Astronauts Activity Report, May 2001

Furukawa, Hoshide and Sumino began their Advanced Training last month, and also had the opportunity to operate flight hardware of the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo's" robot arm, which will actually be launched into space.
This is their April training primary activity report.

ISS system training
Furukawa, Hoshide, and Sumino received US system training using simulators at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC), Texas.

This is a part of the Advanced Training in which astronauts from the international partners study ISS systems together in detail. One astronaut from the US, four from Europe, one from Russia, and three from Japan participated in the training. In the future, Kibo's training will be held in Japan for the astronauts of the international partners.

They received training on the basic operation of US systems such as onboard computers, power systems, thermal control systems, and environment control and life support systems.

Operation of Kibo's robot arm
The three had the opportunity to operate the flight hardware of Kibo's robot arm at Tsukuba Space Center.
This was a great opportunity as a familiarization on the actual flight hardware, which they will be operating in space in the future. They will also have a better understanding on the differences between the training simulator and the actual hardware. This knowledge will be beneficial for their future training and development/operational technical assignments on robot arms.
